Nursing I provides an overview of the nursing program at Western Iowa Tech Community College and the role of the individual as a student, introducing the student to the practical nurse’s role in the health care environment. Concepts of health, illness, and environment as they relate to nursing practice are discussed. Students are introduced to the principles of communication, elements of the nursing process, and roles of caregiver, manager, and member of profession. Emphasis is placed on predictable needs of the client utilizing Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns within the nursing process. Critical thinking is inherent in the nursing process and incorporated throughout the course. Advisor permission is required to enroll. Enrollment in the hybrid online section of this course also requires all support courses for the PN Program to have been previously completed.
