13creditsThis course informs students of the EMS provider’s roles and responsibilities. Students learn the importance of personal wellness in EMS including injury and infectious disease prevention. The course also provides an overview of human systems, pharmacology, venous access, advanced airway management, patient assessment, and trauma management. To successfully complete this course, students must demonstrate competency in skills for patients of all ages within the scope of practice. The student will participate in and document patient contacts and field experience. Additional contact hours (up to 3 times stated minimum) may be needed to meet the course competencies.
Corequisite: EMS 541, EMS 810, EMS 820, Students must be 17 years of age at the time of enrollment of the course; have a health physical and immunizations up to date; have a current AHA BLS provider card (CCPR 1033); have successfully completed the Mandatory Reporter Course (CNUR 1030); currently be certified at a minimum as an Iowa EMT or hold a valid NREMT registration; and Instructor consent.
