The Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree are designed for transfer to a 4-year institution. These suggested plans of study will lead to completion of the AA or AS degree requirements listed in the college catalog. These are suggested plans of study only and it is critical that students confer with their intended transfer institution, as well as their academic advisor, to make the best course selections in meeting degree requirements. The college maintains a large number of articulation agreements that specifically outline efficient transfer plans to partner colleges and universities.

Sociology is the study of social life and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Western Iowa Tech faculty teach diverse and multifaceted research-based coursework in the broad categories of families, gender, and sexuality; social control and deviance; inequality, poverty, and stratification; addiction, environmental, and social justice; and race and ethnic studies. Students examine the most pressing social problems in these areas, as well as how social groups experience and perceive these issues.

Regardless of one’s career plans, the sociology major is an excellent foundation for lifelong learning and citizenship in the global village and for navigating today’s global marketplace and information society. Majoring in sociology prepares students to successfully transfer to a 4-year college/university for a Bachelor’s in Sociology, and then for graduate school and a wide variety of careers such as law, social psychology, social research, social work, politics, public administration, social justice activism, urban and community planning, human resources, education, and market research.
