SUR 138 - Surgical Technology Practice

6 credits
This course introduces the student to the concepts and procedures of surgical care. Topics to be covered include aseptic technique, hand washing, the surgical scrub, and surgical gowning techniques, as well as daily procedures and protocols of the surgical process. The student will become familiar with the various routines in the operating room such as case assignments, gathering supplies, surgeon’s preference cards, basic pharmacology, operating room records, back table, and Mayo stand set-up and signals, handling of specimens and medication, wound classifications, surgical counting, and draping of the patient. Hands-on practical experience in the laboratory. Instructor consent required.
