HIT 248 - Essentials of Medical Coding

2 credits
This course provides an overview of the medical coding systems of ICD-10-CM and CPT as well as application of these codes in medical facilities. Students will identify the medical documentation used to determine the correct ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II codes. Students demonstrate use of the coding manuals by assigning codes to medical diagnoses, procedures and services utilizing coding guidelines and compliance regulations.  Medical scenarios and case studies will allow students to practice assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II codes recognizing how these coding systems work together, identifying medical necessity, usage of modifiers while following compliance guidelines and regulations for health care reimbursement, reporting to external agencies for data collection and research.
