Western Iowa Tech Community College offers a variety of student services. Professionally trained staff and counselors are accessible to all students.

Accommodation Services

Accommodation Services Office for all three campuses is located in Enrollment Services, Room A320. Appointments are held face to face or by zoom.  Persons who suspect or have documented disabilities may request reasonable accommodations for equal access to services and the academic experience at WITCC.  The student should indicate the nature of the disability and identify specific needs and/or requested accommodations.  The student is responsible for providing documentation of the disability.  Approved accommodations may include modified adaptations, alternative testing, specialized study aids, color-coded materials, large print copies, and assistive technology may be made available as needed. A Student Assisted Technology and Software Agreement must be signed each semester for usage.

The Kurzweil Reader is available to ALL WITCC students.  This tool allows for a wide variety of adaptations to having your textbooks read out loud in your preferred language.

ACT Prep

The Comet Learning Center offers ACT prep sessions on Saturday mornings during the fall and spring semesters. Please contact CLC at 712-274-8733 x1334 for a copy of the current schedule.

Assessment/ALEKS

The ALEKS Math Assessment may be required of students entering General Studies programs and/or courses as well as those programs with designated ALEKS cut scores. Individual interpretation of the results is provided by the Comet Learning Center. Check with staff in the Comet Learning Center or for assessment requirements and referral to the Testing Center.

Bookstore

The WITCC Bookstore is located at Entrance 1, across from IT. Students may purchase textbooks, supplies, clothing and novelty items at the bookstore or order them online for delivery or pick-up at bookstore.witcc.edu. Bookstore hours and return policies can also be found on the website.

Payment for bookstore merchandise is due at the time of the purchase. Accepted methods of payment are cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, and Discover. Students sponsored by an agency (JTP, DVRS, Promise Jobs, etc.) must have a written authorization from the agency before charges can be processed. Students receiving federal grants can charge against the balance remaining after tuition and fees. Sponsored students and students with federal grants can begin charging one week before the semester begins.

Rather than a physical textbook, some courses use digital content embedded into the course to provide an adaptive learning platform that minimizes the cost of the textbooks required for students. Costs of the digital content varies and is charged to the student through a course fee associated with the course. There is no tangible item that must be purchased through the bookstore.

If a student does not want to utilize this content, the student may opt-out and receive a refund on the charged fee. Opt-outs are only accepted within the first 10 days of the course and must be requested through the bookstore. Access to the digital materials are then removed and the student is responsible to find the required course materials by other means.

Book Return Policy

  1. You MUST have your receipt for any returns.
  2. Fall and Spring Semesters: Textbooks must be returned within two weeks from the start of class for a full refund. Summer Semester: Textbooks must be returned within one week from the start of class for a full refund. Textbooks must be in the same condition as when purchased for full refund. Books CANNOT be returned if written or highlighted in. Books with shrink wrap CANNOT be returned if removed from wrap.
  3. Clothing must be returned within one week of the dated receipt and in new condition. Supplies cannot be returned.
  4. Defective products should be returned immediately for refund or exchange.
  5. A “Used Book Buyback” is usually held everyday of each semester. Books are purchased for a “used book” wholesaler. Prices are based on national demands and resale value.

Career Planning

The Career Services is located in A409 in the library area and is available to all WITCC prospective and current students and alumni. Career Explorations, resume writing, resume review, cover letter assistance, job search tips, interview tips, and live mock interviews are services available to students and alumni through the Career Services Center. Career Fairs with employers on the Sioux City campus are hosted each fall and spring. CollegeCentral.com/WITCC is our online platform with Career Services information available 24/7. Cengage Set Up/Canvas Assistance

The Comet Learning Center (CLC) assists students with setting up their Cengage Unlimited accounts and getting their online textbooks. Assistance is also provided for navigating in Canvas for your courses throughout the semester.

Chosen Name Policy

WITCC recognizes that faculty, staff, and students may wish to identify themselves by a name other than their legal name. As a college focused on inclusivity and respect, our goal is to build an affirming campus environment where community members can be called and identified by the name they choose. Therefore, WITCC has adopted a policy where members of our college community use a chosen name where possible in the course of their interactions.

Comet CLASS

Comet CLASS is a leadership opportunity for students who would like to make an impact on the WITCC college campus. Formerly know as Student Senate, the goal of this program is to Cultivate Leadership, Advocacy, and Student Success at the College.

To be a Comet CLASS leader means that you have a voice on campus and you are an ambassador for your fellow students. you will experience personal growth and development as you network with college and community leaders, travel across the state, and attend conferences. You will also build community with other students while participating in social activities.

Comet Learning Center

Tutoring/Academic Coaching The Comet Learning Center, located in the Learning Achievement Center, provides drop-in coaching services in various subject areas for registered WITCC students. No appointment is necessary. Individual tutor schedules are posted each semester. The Comet Learning Center employs both peer and professional tutors. Coaching services are offered free of charge to all WIT students, as well as to middle school and high school students after their school day. For more information contact CLC at 712-274-8733 x1334.

Coaching via Zoom is offered to students who are unable to come to campus when advance preparations are in place. Coaching into the evening happens Monday through Thursday on the Sioux City campus. Coaches are available via Zoom on the weekends for some subject areas. Please contact the CLC at 712-274-8733 x1334 for additional details and/or to set up a session.

Supplemental Instruction The Comet Learning Center coordinates Supplemental Instruction sessions for select courses each semester. These sessions take place outside of class time and offer students an opportunity to review important material in a group setting with a qualified Supplemental Instruction Leader (student who has previously mastered the course material). Students who participate in the free Supplemental Instruction sessions have historically outperformed other students in the class.

Computer Resources

  • Computers and related technology are available to support the college curriculum and provide access to the Internet.
  • A computer login account will be created for each student that enables them to use the college’s academic and system software for the duration of their classroom experience.
  • Accounts for my.witcc.edu, the WITCC student portal, will also be created for each student upon registration. Students will be able to access all classroom related information, register for courses, send e-mail, find campus club information, College and community news, and much, much more!

Commencement Ceremony

Students are encouraged to participate in the formal commencement ceremony upon completion of their requirements for degree, diploma or certificate. Dates of the graduation ceremony are included in the Academic Calendar .

Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be given special recognition during graduation ceremonies for their outstanding achievements. Honors are also noted on the student’s official transcript.

Counseling

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or need someone to talk to, WITCC mental health counselors are available for one-on-one counseling at our Sioux City, Cherokee, and Denison campuses. The Counseling office on the Sioux City campus is located in Enrollment Services.  Counseling is free and bound by HIPAA confidentiality laws.   Students are seen on a voluntary basis.  Services are provided face to face or through Zoom.  Students on the branch campuses can be seen for face to face counseling by a local provider, free and with the same confidentiality laws applied.  Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

English Language Learners (ELL)

The ELL program is designed to improve the skill levels of English language learners in speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Classes progress from basic through advanced English literacy. Classroom instruction, supplemented by computer-aided instruction, is competency-based with emphasis on life and employability skills.

Food Pantry/Comet Cupboard

The Comet Cupboard Foodbank is located on the WITCC Sioux City campus in room A300. The pantry is open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. If needed after businesses hours or on weekends call Campus Safety ext. 6414.

Health Clinic

The Health Clinic is available to assist with program health pre-requisites and WIT athletic physicals. Health Clinic Services are provided by Tri-State Nursing. The clinic is located on the WITCC Sioux City campus in the Dr. Robert H. Kiser Building in room A212 and open on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Meningococcal Meningitis affects the brain and spinal cord and can cause high fever, headache and stiff neck; about 10% of cases are fatal. There is a higher risk to individuals who live in a college dorm. Vaccination can help prevent this disease. You can obtain information about this disease and the vaccine from your personal physician, enrollment services and student housing, or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website. As a new student or a student living in student housing you may be asked to indicate whether or not you have received the meningococcal disease vaccination.

High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) Preparation

The HSED program is designed to improve literacy skill levels in reading, writing, math, problem solving, and other literacy skills. The HSED diploma is a goal of many of the adult learners. Learners progress at their own pace using a variety of resources including print materials and computer-aided instruction. HSED classes are located in A424, and at the Branch Campuses.

Inclusion Office

The Office of Inclusion provides advocacy, innovation and leadership to continually cultivate an inclusive and welcoming experience at WITCC for every student. This is achieved through the development and implementation of institutional initiatives, policies, protocols and procedures under the framework of Inclusive Excellence.

International Students - Conversations with International Students

The Comet Learning Center (CLC) holds weekly sessions in English practice and communication with any student interested in improving their English or improving their relationships with the International Students on campus.  Contact the CLC at 712-274-8733 x1334 for opportunities.

Learning Achievement Center

The Learning Achievement Center represents the heart of the campus. It contains Library Services and The Comet Learning Center.

Library Services

  • A collection consisting of more than 46,000 print and media items providing information in diverse formats;
  • Subscriptions to hundreds of periodical titles and to local and regional newspapers;
  • Reference assistance and bibliographic instruction;
  • Worldwide interlibrary loan service;
  • Patron privileges at all the Sioux City Library cooperative libraries with verification that you are a current WITCC student;
  • Check out privileges at most libraries in Iowa with verification that you are a current WITCC student;
  • Visit our Web site at www.witcc.edu/library for access to:
    • Online databases with full text components;
    • Online and interactive encyclopedias;
    • Streamable Electronic Books, Audiobooks, and Videos;
    • Quick access to electronic newspapers and verified Web sites under Internet Resources.

Visit your WITCC Library in the Kiser Building (near the Overlook Cafe area) or virtually at www.witcc.edu/library. You will find us in the Learning Achievement Center. Our library is set up as a large open area and can be used for group study, but you’ll be able to find a quiet place for study too.

The Sioux City Libraries treat each other’s students as our own. As part of the library cooperative, your WITCC ID will allow you to check out materials at Briar Cliff, Mercy Medical, Morningside College, Sioux City Public, and the St. Lukes Libraries. As part of the worldwide Interlibrary Loan cooperative, WITCC can borrow materials for your use, from around the world. These Interlibrary Loans can be done through one of our databases called First Search. To check out materials, bring your Student ID which can be obtained for free in the Enrollment Services area.

Our online resources are available from anywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access to the databases from off campus requires a username and password. The username is always library but the password changes each semester. The username and password can be found on the Library card on https://my.witcc.edu or by asking any library staff.

Our online resources include scholarly and popular press full text articles, eBooks, encyclopedias, videos, court cases, sample tests, tutorials, downloadable books and audiobooks, employment aids, veteran support tools, help learning other languages, and so much more.

Middle School and High School Study Time

The Comet Learning Center (CLC)  offers an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive free coaching/tutoring after their school day with some restrictions. Please contact the LCL at 712-274-8733 x1334 for more information.

Military Learner Room

A quiet, distraction-reduced study area for those affiliated with the military is open during normal business hours on the WITCC Sioux City campus. It is located in Room L203.

Mother’s Room on Sioux City campus

The Mother’s Room is a private room where nursing mothers can pump breast milk. The room is privately located in the rear of the admissions area in Room A311. It includes a clean counter to place a pump and personal items, comfortable chair, electric outlet, and sink. To use the room, please book an appointment.

Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society

WITCC students can earn scholastic recognition through membership in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the honors society for two-year colleges. The College chapter, Beta Zeta Mu, provides opportunities for campus such as community service, leadership development, and scholarships. Students who qualify for membership and maintains eligibility, may wear the PTK gold stole at graduation and have the PTK gold seal affixed to their diplomas. This honor recognition will also be recognized by designating Phi Theta Kappa in writing on the transcripts of eligible PTK members.

The PTK member becomes part of the national and international organization that offers scholarships, a study abroad program, and opportunities for honors study.

To be eligible for membership, a WITCC student must be in an associate degree program, have earned 12 credit hours or more at Western Iowa Tech Community College with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. For further information on how to join Phi Theta Kappa, phone the contact advisor at (712) 274-8733, x1419.

Reflection Room

The Reflection Room (L329) is intended for members of the College community to meditate, pray and/or otherwise spend time in quiet reflection. During building hours, the room is dedicated for individuals or groups wishing to engage in structured or unstructured reflection that suits their personal faith practice, including those who do not ascribe to a certain faith.

Replacement Diploma

Students needing to order a replacement degree, diploma, or certificate can do so through the following steps:

  • There is a $20 replacement fee for each credential ordered

  • Sign in- you will need to create an account if you don’t have one
  • Click on Replacement Diploma Digital and Print

Once your order is received it will be placed with our next group of degree orders.

Reverse Credit Transfer

Earn your associate degree or certificate from Western Iowa Tech Community College even after transferring to a four-year institution.

Western Iowa Tech students who transfer to a college or university without completing their associate degree are given the opportunity to combine community college and university credits to achieve an associate degree.

HOW TO DO A REVERSE CREDIT TRANSFER

The Reverse Credit Transfer process is simple.

  • Have your official transcript sent to Western Iowa Tech Community College.
  • Apply for graduation.
  • Western Iowa Tech Community College posts your degree.

There is no cost for official transcript review, degree posting, or commencement ceremony.

 

Start now by sending your information to transcirpts@witcc.edu and can start the process of getting your credits transferred into Western Iowa Tech Community College to complete your degree.

Dr. Robert E. Dunker Student Center

All Western Iowa Tech Community College students who are currently enrolled in a credit program or HSED program may use the Center facilities and equipment at no charge. Members of the community and non-credit students who wish to use the Center facilities and equipment may purchase a Dunker Access Pass for $99.00. See below for more information.

Students and Dunker Access Pass holders may also purchase a Comet Pass which allows admission to any and all Comet fitness courses* offered in the Student Center for six months at a time. This will be indicated by a sticker located on the WITCC IDs of participants.

*All fitness courses subject to change.

Student Center Rules and Regulations:

  • All students and employees must scan their WIT ID to enter the gym
  • You will need your physical WIT ID to check out gym equipment
  • Only clean dry gym shoes are permitted past the front desk; change shoes in the lobby
  • You must have a change of shoes to use the basketball court (tennis shoes only). Absolutely no street shoes allowed on court, no bare feet
  • No food or drink allowed beyond the front desk with exception of water and energy drinks in closed container
  • Personal sound systems will not be allowed in the gym except for the trainers during classes or athletic practice
  • Gym facilities can be used only in the allotted time slot
  • Dress code enforced
    • Sneakers (clean/dry), pants, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops (covering the entire torso)
  • Everyone is expected to wipe down all equipment after use

The Student Center reserves the right to adjust the “Open Gym” hours to accommodate the athletic program practice schedules.

  • Monday - Thursday  8:00 am - 10:00 pm
  • Friday  8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Student Center reserves the right to adjust the Weight Room hours to accommodate the athletic program practice schedules.

Dunker Access Pass (non-refundable)

  • Available to the community
  • Cost: $99.00 for 6 months

The Dunker Access Pass allows Siouxland community members to gain access to the Dr. Robert E. Dunker Student Center for 6 months for a cost of $99. Register for an Access Pass in Enrollment Services, entrance 1.

Comet Pass (non-refundable)

  • Available to current faculty, staff, students and Dunker Access Pass holders.
  • Cost: $25.00 for 6 months

The Comet Pass allows access to unlimited Comet fitness courses for the 6 month time frame of the pass. Comet fitness courses include but are not limited to zumba, spin, yoga, circuit training, and self defense. Course times and availability are scheduled per semester and are subject to change. Upon signing up for the Comet Pass, recipients are issued a sticker to place on their WITCC ID to indicate pass validation and pass duration. There are no refunds after the first session of fitness courses of each semester.

Comet Day Pass (non-refundable)

  • Available to any faculty, staff, students, or community member.
  • Cost: $5.00 per day

The Comet Day Pass allows one day access to the Dr. Robert E. Dunker Student Center including all of it’s facilities and Comet fitness courses that are scheduled for that day. Day passes are available at the front desk in the student center. A photo ID is required upon admittance to the Student Center. The day pass provides an opportunity for community members to experience the student center facilities and try out fitness courses. Faculty, staff and students may purchase the day pass to try out fitness courses they might be interested in.

There is no charge for students currently enrolled in an active class.

What if I want to use the Center but am not registered in an active class?
Students not currently enrolled in an active class may register for the 6 month Dunker Access Pass with a cost of $99 (non-refundable).

Do I need an ID to access the Center?

Yes. Anyone using the facility and/or attending fitness courses is required to have a valid WITCC ID and scan in at the front desk upon entering with the exception of Comet Day Pass users. Students in an active, qualifying class and Dunker Access Pass holders may obtain their WITCC ID in Enrollment Services. Those who use a day pass are required to bring a photo ID to be admitted to the Center.

Sensory Room on Sioux City campus

The sensory room is available to students or employees needing a quiet room to decompress. The room is privately located in the rear of the admissions area in Room A314. The room is equipped with comfortable seating and calming aesthetic to create a tranquil space for anyone experiencing anxiety over stimulation. To use the room, please book an appointment.

Student Activities

The Student Activities Office plans and coordinates a variety of special activities that involve community service activities, music groups, comedians, picnics, dances, club sports, and various trips.

Student Housing and Residence Life

WITCC’s student housing is located on the Sioux City Campus, within short walking distance of all campus buildings. Prairie Place and Bur Oak Suites offer private bedrooms in suite-style living quarters. The Sun Ridge Court offers apartment-style living. Students who live on campus have an 14 meal/week plan for Monday through Friday. Please contact the student housing office at 712-274-8733 x2748 for further details or questions.

Student Insurance

Western Iowa Tech Community College does not have a compulsory insurance plan, but the college recommends that students enroll in a voluntary group accident and/or health insurance plan, available through commercial insurance companies. If students are enrolled as a member of a family health or hospital related plan, students should check to see at what age that coverage ends.

Students are encouraged to participate in one or more of the many student organizations. Several are associated with particular academic programs of study. Hobby interest clubs are also available depending on student interest. Each group must have a faculty advisor and must be chartered by the Student Activities Office.

Transfer Information

College catalogs and transfer information for four-year colleges and universities are located in Enrollment Services. Transfer representatives from regional colleges visit WITCC regularly to provide information to students pursuing a baccalaureate degree. TRIO Student Support Services Program

Tutoring

The Comet Learning Center (CLC), located in the Learning Achievement Center, provides drop-in academic support services in various subject areas for students. Appointments are not necessary, but may be made to ensure adequate time. Academic coach schedules are posted each semester. The CLC employs both peer and professional coaches. Services include academic coaching (tutoring), math preparation and ALEKS test slips, reading/writing assessment and assistance, test prep, MAT-772 Applied Math test out materials and testing, study groups, and workshops to develop skills for academic success. Services are offered via face-to-face, through Zoom sessions, and through email. All services offered via the CLC are free of charge to students.
