EGT 500 - Applied Machine Design I

4 credits
This course introduces students to fundamental mechanical principles, emphasizing the design and integration of basic mechanical systems.  Students explore the six simple machines and their application in creating compound machines, learning to integrate gears, gear trains, chains, sprockets, and bearings into mechanical designs.  The course focuses on applying statics principles to calculate forces, moments, and stresses while also introducing material selection and cost estimation.  Students gain foundational knowledge in designing simple structural components and mechanical drive systems, with an emphasis on creating functional, efficient, and cost-effective designs.
